Overview

Perfect Plate is a family-owned restaurant in Hyderabad serving 200+ customers daily. The owner approached us after a particularly bad weekend where 15 orders were mixed up, 8 customers walked out, and two negative Google reviews were posted — all because the paper-based ordering system couldn't keep up during peak hours.

The problem

The restaurant's workflow was entirely paper-based: handwritten orders passed from waiters to the kitchen, manual calculations for bills, and no way to track which orders were in progress. During peak hours (lunch and dinner rush), the kitchen had 30+ pending orders with no priority system. Customers couldn't see estimated wait times, leading to frustration and walkouts. The owner was also unable to track which menu items sold best or identify slow-moving dishes.

What we built

  • Built a native Android application using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose with Material 3 design language for a modern, intuitive interface.
  • Designed a digital menu system with categorized items, photos, descriptions, and real-time availability toggles (out-of-stock items gray out instantly).
  • Created a table-side ordering flow where waiters select a table, browse the menu, customize orders (spice level, dietary preferences, special requests), and submit directly to the kitchen display.
  • Developed a kitchen dashboard (KDS) running on a wall-mounted tablet showing incoming orders sorted by priority, with timer indicators and one-tap status updates.
  • Implemented push notifications to alert waiters when orders are ready for pickup, and automated bill generation with itemized totals.

Results

The restaurant switched fully to digital ordering. Orders flow cleanly from waiter to kitchen without paper handoffs, bills are generated automatically, and the offline-first architecture has kept the service running even during WiFi outages in the middle of dinner rush.

What we learned

  • Offline-first isn't optional for restaurant apps — WiFi drops happen at the worst possible time (peak dinner rush).
  • Parallel testing with real dinner services caught 12 edge cases that simulated testing would have missed.
  • Kitchen staff need large touch targets and minimal taps — they're working with wet hands and moving fast.
